Western Digital My DVR Expander 500 GB eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1S5000VN

The only thing Tivo’s done right (besides allowing you to share your media with your networked computers) is additional storage via eSATA external harddrives.
My Wireless G USB Tivo adapter didn’t work without a software upgrade to my Tivo DVR (it came with software that was 2 years out of date). My Tivo DVR had out of date software, the cable card you are required to get to make it work is not compatible with ONDEMAND, and it costs about 200x as much as just renting a Comcast DVR.
If not for the ability to add the additional storage and export media to my computer, my Tivo DVR would have been a complete rip off. As it is, I still feel cheated.
But hey, at least the 500 GB storage adapter by Western Digital is easy, inexpensive, and doubles the capacity of my Tivo DVR.

I purchased the WDG1S5000VN 500GB My DVR Expander eSATA. The plug does not fit my Comcast DVR. Is there an adapter available to fit, or is this product not adaptable to my type of DVR? Thanks.

Beware that digital rights management by TIVO is implemented by splitting each recording between the TIVO DVR and the Expander shown here. Once hooked up the two devices can not be divorced without losing all you programs on both the TIVO and the Expander.
If you are like my wife you will loose a lot of movies stored for later viewing. Wait for HDD or when your TIVO drive is filled up before committing. YOU DO NOT WANT TO LOSE YOUR EXPANDER BEFORE YOUR TIVO GOES, if you value your recordings. The average life of one of these HD expanders is 3-5 years or, if you have a defective one like mine, less than 2.

i got this for 175ish . I have never seen it below 200. Now its even lower than 175. Im guessing because a bigger size is being released. Tivo updated software yet again so only this drive works.
Not much to write for a review it works, if it didnt that would be just pitiful. My tivo was full and now its free to randomly suggest shows once again.

This box isn’t compatible with scientific atlanta dvrs even if they are running SARA software!! I will have to format it and use it for a back up hard drive since my wife threw away all the packing material. Very disappointing! Note— my dvr is an 8300 HDC and some of the boxes mentioned here as working are not 8300 series HDC so beware and be sure of compatibility issues!
